Some of us are only 97% human.

Some of us are only 97% human. That missing three percent allows connectivity with all other species that roam and grow attached to this planet. My personal guess is that we are human and “other”. This “otherness” allows us to examine our humanity from afar. If you are from the human/other crowd you know exactly what I’m referring to. It’s a willingness, desire and ability to communicate with everything that surrounds you. You feel connected to everything instead of just humans. Since I was a child I greeted all living beings that surrounded me as I walked past them.

What prompts this subject was an extraordinary event from last night. While standing in my foyer I sensed movement outside my door. When I looked I saw two tiny kittens drinking water from one of the plates I leave outside for my animal friends. They looked like porcupines. Gray fur standing straight up. It’s their baby fur!!! When they sensed me they hid under a planter right next to the water bowl. I’m thinking how is this even possible? They can’t walk up these steps! Cute as only kittens can be. Heart shaped faces with huge blue eyes. The conversation was. Hi there cutie. Miauuuuuuuuuuu! Then they hid under the planter again.

Food always helps so I served a dinner of warm milk and meat from a can. They ignored me. As the afternoon turned to dusk and nighttime I left only one light one so they’d rest. As I watched from indoors they came out from under the planter and ate their dinner and off to sleep under the planter again.

I was up a three this morning and they were gone. Their mom has left them for me to babysit while she took care of some urgent business.

This was a beautiful gift. A gesture of trust between two species. Trust is clue. We shared elements of peace and understanding and achieved a give and take without uttering one single word. Somehow this cat knew that I would take good care of her kittens until her return. If something stopped her from returning I would make sure that they had a safe life. We know each other. Are you 97% human? I hope so.
