The image above is a thought provoking meme which prompted me to take a close look at what really happened between the USS Maddox and North Vietnamese torpedo ships. The meme claims that this attack never happened. I published this same meme on Facebook, where I was closely monitored, and did not receive any reprimand for publishing false information meaning that this statement stands as truth. Still, I decided to look into this event for more details. This is what I found.
The Gulf of Tonkin incident, also known as the USS Maddox incident, was an international confrontation that led to the US engaging more directly in the Vietnam War.. It involved both a proven confrontation August 2, 1964, carried by North Vietnamese forces in response to covert operations in the coastal region of the Gulf, and a second claimed confrontation on August 4, 1964, between ships of North Vietnam and the USA in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. The original American report blamed North Vietnam for both incidents, but further investigation suggested that the dismissal by the Department of State and other government personnel of legitimate concerns regarding the veracity of the second incident was used to justify an escalation by the United States to state of war against Vietnam. (Wikipedia).
I urge you read this second paragraph repeatedly. It takes a moment to overcome what we have previously told to believe and the seeing of the truth in plain sight.
My question is, since we have proof of the events what the United States government is willing to engage in in order to create a justification for the our war machine to swallow another country, can you think of other events that have a similar chime to them? I certainly can.
