Buddhism is particularly attractive as a philosophy since they claim to not know of the existence of god since they have never seen or met one. They also focus, as a philosophy, on humanity’s possibility of enlightenment, which is nothing more or less than opening yourself to the understanding of ourselves and the universe we inhabit. The most attractive aspect of Buddhism is its quest and desire for peace and compassion for all sentient beings.

While I sit in my small corner of the world and watch the endless carnage developing right before my eyes I yearn for peace and tranquility. Do you?

Buddhism has invested thousands of years in learning and teaching us humans how to quiet our over-busy minds. They have taught us how to focus on our breathing in order to silence our minds. By doing so you allow yourself to flow and become one with everything.

Sanskrit is the original language of Buddhism. It is now a dead language but was originally used to create the mantras or organized sounds which we still use and cherish today. Om, for example, is considered to be the first sound heard in the universe.

The following mantra, repeated 108 times, while you focus on your breathing, will help quiet that noisy mind and allow some rest and peace to enter your being.

OM MA NI PAD ME HUM:

Om is the sound of the vibration of the universe. Meant to destroy attachments to ego and establish generosity.

Ma removes the attachment to jealousy and establishes ethics.

Ni removes the attachment to desire and establishes patience.

Pad removes the attachment to prejudice and establishes perseverance.

Me removes the attachment to possessiveness and establishes concentration.

Hum: removes the attachment to hatred and established wisdom.

Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum opens the door to a peaceful life. Maybe we cannot stop the madness and violence that surrounds us but we can do so within ourselves. We show the path. Now it’s up to you to walk it.
