Most people spend their adult lives working. Unless you are a trust fund baby, you go out with the rest of us to work each and every morning. Mortgages to pay. Children to support and protect. Cars to buy. That is our life. Some of us have been very lucky and can put our talents to work in areas that allow some level of mental and emotional freedom. Others, with fewer options, work where they can work and do so. Some jobs are harder on our bodies than others. I watch, with kindness and concern, as my gardener toils under 105-degree heat without complaints. It took me a very long time to understand why gardeners hate gardens. Maybe hate is too strong a word. Being a city girl who worked long and hard to have this garden, it seemed irreverent that not everyone was in awe of every weed that sprang from the ground. It is hard, sweaty work that will not buy you a large house and a sports car. In the end, work is easier for some and harder for others. But we work because we need to.

On the bright side, we get to retire from everyday work at some point in our lives. What to do with your time and newfound freedom is vital to our longevity. Many stories have been shared about how someone passed shortly after retirement. The cause doesn’t necessarily have to be the actual retirement, but we’ve made the association with retirement and the dangers of such a change. In other words, we can’t wait to retire but are terrified of what this future holds.

I’m going to adventure out into saying that everyone while working their job and living their life, pondered about what they’d do if and when they retired. By chance, I’ve been privy to one case of recent retirement. I reconnected with someone I’ve known for a very long time. He explained that he had recently retired from his top management job at a utility company and was at last pursuing his dream of learning the art of mosaics. He is driven by the freedom to do what he wants. Classes, lessons, seminars, workshops, you name it, he’s there toiling lovingly at doing something he always wanted to do. Beautiful results.

If you are lucky enough to have a body that holds up and allows you to reach and grab what you always hoped to do, you find heaven on Earth. Happy Retirement, my friends. Grab it and run.
