It’s baffling to watch how our beloved planet burns to the ground. Oceans are reaching boiling temperatures, killing everything within. When I read about these events, I wonder to myself what it must be like to be slowly cooked alive. (Let’s not mention the poor fate of Lobsters.) This past summer, we lived through six months of scorching heat, which gave me a sneak preview of what this slow cooking action feels like. The closer you are to the Equator, the higher the temperature. Add the humidity factor; the desert storm sands factor, and you will come to realize that you are coming closer to your demise. This thing called global warming is rapidly becoming global boiling.

As I always do, I engaged in a bit of research. The human body is a well-oiled working machine until it’s exposed to heat over 105 degrees. Our biology becomes less efficient and starts to malfunction. There was one particular day when I suddenly stood still and realized that my body, my biology, was in distress. All the cooling-down functions were available to me, yet I was in distress. It wasn’t necessarily a heat stroke; it was the act of being cooked alive.

It would be fair to say that I am an environmentalist. My love for nature and all creatures within our beloved planet is legendary. I’ve engaged in hundreds, if not thousands, of changes in my lifestyle in my attempt to help mitigate my previous disastrous environmental footprint. I’ll make a list of these changes someday in the hopes of inspiring one other person to follow suit.

I find myself at a crossroads between being cooked alive this upcoming summer or contributing to the very heat that promises to kill me sooner than I expected. By adding air conditioning to my environment, I promise to eliminate my discomfort by increasing the heat emitted to the planet. I’m not seeing a joint effort from the rest of society. I live in a comfortable area. Big houses, expensive cars, and that kind of outlook. Very few people, if any, have turned off the machines and come face to face with our reality. We will die sooner than later from global warming. I keep saying, knowing that most people wish I would put a lid on it. I cannot.

The reason I even question if I will or not start the airconditioning saga is the image above that is listing the birds that have become extinct during 2023. Do I have the right and the heart to overlook the lives of other creatures because I may feel discomfort from a situation that is entirely our own fault? Maybe I buy more and bigger fans.

As we say goodbye to this very eventful year and inventory our lives it cannot go without mentioning the glorious species which have ceased forever to roam this beautiful land. Their songs have been silenced by us. Yes, we are the hand that failed to notice them and trampled over their existence. I bid them fair well. I bid them goodnight. Until we meet again, somewhere, sometime.
