I like innovation in all areas of life. In the food department, I’m always looking for new recipes. At the supermarket, it’s common for me to pick up an unknown product, curious about what it could taste like.
This innovation theory ends when the subject of fresh basil comes into play. Many moons ago, I tried bottled pesto and swore never to use it again. Since I live in the tropics, I have the luxury of growing my fresh basil and picking leaves or bunches as I see fit.
I recently purchased a tube of basil paste, breaking all these rules. It cost about $8, so if it didn’t work, it could be disposed of without breaking the bank.
Surprise, surprise. It’s awesome. Its shelf life is just a couple of weeks, but that’s good if you hate basil swimming in brine.
Capricorn Science has never recommended a product in five years, but I keep thinking that folks who cannot grow their own fresh basil could tremendously benefit from this wonderful-tasting Basil Paste.
The brand is Gourmet Garden. The shelf life is stamped on the cap.
I’m planning some meatball sandwiches, and after everything is tucked away on the french bread, I will run a stip of the basil from beginning to end, allowing the flavor to entice each bite. Yum
