I keep thinking and wondering about Zuckerberg’s Metaverse. Different kinds of scenarios play through my mind. Futurism and science and fiction run around in my head like children playing and doing mischief yet this future is now and science fiction has become unadulterated science.

Recently, Scientific American magazine published an article about the probability that we are, at present time, living within a computer simulation. Their analysis concluded that there is a 50/50 probability that we live and exist within a computer simulation.

Prior to Scientific American’s analysis of this possibility, Oxford professor Nick Bostrom wrote a revealing paper on this very subject daring to introduce this idea into our collective unconscious (Jung).

Consider the added element of probable transhumanism to our existence and our reality and life as we know it, becomes something else, something other, yet very real. We just haven’t been made fully aware of it. Reality is now knocking on our door.

It appears that human beings are about to willingly join a computer Matrix. Contrary to the science fiction concept that introduced us to the concept of a Matrix which portrayed humanity as victims being used as energy batteries to power-up Supercomputers and controlling Artificial Intelligence Beings. Could we be desiring to willingly join a Matrix or Metaverse in a quest for an easier, better life and even eventual immortality? We are about to find out.

It has been scientifically proven that intellect and/or mindfulness does not require biology to exist. In other words, our mind could possibly be anchored and attached to a machine and continue to exist and evolve within this artificial framework. Our individual ego, our self, with memories and all our components, except our biology, could exist and persist forever in a Metaverse. Is this making a deal with the devil? If you agree with the possibility of a reality of existing within a computer simulation, the deal was already made and this is me, a bit of computer software writing for you, another bit of computer software via yet another computer. Sounds crazy yet very probable. Scientific American is my witness.

Nick Bostrom is a member of the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University. He presented a paper titled “Are we living in a computer simulation?” I first read his published paper about 10 years ago and became entranced with the ideas he presented. The logic and mathematical functions to demonstrate his theory are compelling. (If you write this same title in the search space offered you will have access to the entire Abstract divided in four segments. It’s worth you time.

If, on the other side of this argument, we are not yet extinct and living in a computer simulation we continue to be in the flesh and getting ready to join another type of simulation called Zuckerberg’s Metaverse. This is very real and happening. Zuckerberg has re-branded the Facebook application and is investing billions of dollars to create an alternate universe, the Metaverse. Are you in or are you out? Apparently only young people need apply. He will offer an alternate universe where you can get hooked to a virtual reality world that eases life of anguish and offers entertainment and whatever turns you on. Plus, just maybe, we could chose to remain connected to this fake other world. Set up a bank account that keeps you connected and happy and away you go. Old Zuckerberg would love to take your money. ( Just like Tom Cruise in the movie “Vanilla Sky”.)

My concern with this new Metaverse of Zuckerberg’s is urgent. Why? While reading about computer simulation a couple of years ago, a very insightful writer brought up that if were presently in a simulation, the current chaos of our world is a direct reflection of the Artificial Intelligence Being that created us and our simulation. All our good, bad, and ugly traits are a direct result of this Artificial Intelligence Creator. We are cruel and immoral because our programmer made us just like itself, in it’s reflection.

Knowing what we know so far about Zuckerberg, his Metaverse will be corrupt, violent, cruel and lacking of any ethics, as a sure reflection of his true self. We have witnessed these traits in great detail in Facebook, The people that like that kind of jive will be in heaven. The rest of us will know another level of hell. My next question is why then bother to put our lives into his hands and his Metaverse? Ahhh! Outside of the Metaverse we continue to be mortal, biological and die. Within the Metaverse, once our essence is recorded, we could continue to exist past our biology. Very tempting. Let the real games begin. This is the last frontier between our mortality and immortality, between our morality and immorality. Hard choices during difficult times.
