My Facebook friend, Vhey Benet, asked me to comment on the following statement from Gloria Steinem on the made-for-tv-drama on the topic of the 1970’s Feminist Movement. This is what Gloria had to say:
“The Series makes it seem as if women are our worst enemies, which keeps us from recognizing who our worst enemies are. Not that we aren’t conflicted, but by and large we don’t have the power to be our own worst enemies.”
I thought long and hard and broke down my response as follows;
1-We are addressing a 50 year time frame. Half a century. In my opinion women have not advance in most of the issues that were addressed fifty years ago.
2-Gloria Steinem uses the words ” worst enemies” twice. I agree with her that we are not our worst enemies since I allocate that spot to the Church.
3-Yes, we ‘are in conflict’ which is the key element blocking our ability to achieve our rightful place in society.
Dear Vhey, I have a lot more to say on this subject but am confined to Gloria’s statement and the docudrama I have not seen. Thanks for asking.
