The Social Contract and how to break it is a political philosophy, an actual or hypothetical compact, or agreement, between ruled and their rulers, defining the rights and duties of each. They then , by exercising natural reason, form a society( and government) by means of a contract among themselves. According to John Locke the only right people give up in order to enter into civil society and its benefits is the right to punish other people for violating rights. No other rights are given up, only the right to be a vigilante.
Both the United States Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution use the theory of social contracts. According to Hobbes, could people decide to break the social contract? The Hobbes contract is between people-people to agree to cede power to a ruler. The only limit is that people retain the right to protect themselves when their lives are threatened.
Here is the philosophy behind the society we live in today. Has the social contract been violated. I say it has. What do you think?
